Why Your Business Website Matters

Small Businesses and Their Websites

I started a business to help small companies grow through website design and marketing. In my small town of 3,000 people, I saw an opportunity—many businesses had no website or marketing strategy. I thought it’d be the perfect place to start. I was wrong. These owners relied on Facebook posts and repeat customers, scraping by with sales barely above a 9-5 job’s pay—except with way more risk. They didn’t see how a website could change that. I realized I wasn’t just selling a service; I was fighting a mindset.

These businesses had settled into mediocrity, surviving on hope and a loyal handful of clients. It’s a brutal cycle: they wonder if they’re bad at business, in the wrong location, or chasing a flawed idea. My task isn’t to peddle empty promises—it’s to convince them that a website and marketing can actually revive their livelihood. Too often, they brush off the cure I offer, saying, “I don’t see the value,” unknowingly signing up for a slow decline.

“People are too busy to stop and browse your business. Today, you have to adapt to a culture of convenience…”

Think Like a Consumer

Social media does work for marketing—some businesses in my town use it with mild success, and it’s a step in the right direction. But posting every other day isn’t enough. To bring customers in, you can’t think like an entrepreneur; you have to think like a consumer.

Take Fast Food for example: it’s not the tastiest option, but it’s convenient. People don’t go there for a fancy date night—they go when they need something fast. Their focus isn’t gourmet food; it’s value and ease. Your business is no different. How many people have hours to spare browsing your store?

Here’s a personal example: I live in a rural area and needed furniture for my home. There’s a store a few minutes away, but they don’t have a website. The next option is 45 minutes to an hour away. I’m busy—I didn’t want to risk wasting time at the local place if they didn’t have what I needed, and I wasn’t driving two hours round-trip to check another store. So, I went online, typed in what I wanted, and had it on its way to my door in 15 minutes. How many sales do you lose because your customers can’t conveniently get what you’re selling?

Convenience points of online shopping:

A Website Is Your Greatest Salesman

Imagine hiring a top-tier salesman—proven to boost revenue and grow your business—at an affordable cost. Would you say no? That’s what many small businesses are doing by skipping a website. How many sales slip away because you’re not open 24/7? Or because your location’s tough to find? Maybe your store doesn’t have space for enough options to interest customers. Competitors show up on Google long before you do. A website solves all of this—and it’s worth the investment.

A Forbes article from February 2020, Why Every Business Needs A Website, backs this up: small businesses with a strong online presence see three times more revenue growth than those without. That’s not a fluke—it’s proof a website isn’t just a luxury; it’s a lifeline.

I hope this can help a business owner out there if they are still on the fence about investing the time or money into a website. It's not risky, and now hopefully you can see all the benefits a website can do for your company. Thanks for reading!
